PCMag.com reports that Steve Jobs’ authorized biography, initially slated for a March 2012 release but recently bumped up to a November 21st debut, will be updated to include details on his resignation as Apple CEO yesterday. The changes will not result in a delay for the book’s release.

Publisher Simon & Schuster said the highly anticipated tell-all biography, written by acclaimed biographer Walter Isaacson, will include Wednesday night’s announcement from Jobs’ point of view.

Simon & Schuster spokeswoman Tracey Guest told PCMag that Isaacson “speaks to Jobs regularly and is still working on the final chapter of the book.”

The biography, simply titled “Steve Jobs”, is the first authorized look at Steve Jobs’ life. It is being written by former Time managing editor Walter Isaacson and is based on over 40 interviews with Jobs and additional interviews with over 100 colleagues, friends, and family members. Jobs has offered his complete cooperation with the effort, making no subject off-limits and not requesting the right to review material before publication.

Digitimes offers a bit of a strange report this morning that just seems to reinforce some details that have been previously reported about the iPhone 5.

The strangest bit, however, is that their report attempts to refute a fake “leak” video that circulated on YouTube earlier this month.

Despite rumors about iPhone 5 featuring a 4.2-inch panel circulating within the IT market for a while, following a leak from Apple’s website in Switzerland in early August

The referenced “leak” video was a clear fake. They seem to have taken the video seriously, but at the least they refute the details of the leak citing “upstream panel suppliers.”

Instead, their sources indicate the iPhone 5 will include a 3.5 to 3.7-inch panel “with a design to allow the bezel of the panel to become thinner and make the screen look larger.” They also report that the glass back of the current iPhone 4 will be changed to a “metal chassis”.

Despite the confused nature of the report, these details come at an interesting time, as the vision of the iPhone 5 has become increasing confused.

Last week, we saw a number of part leaks for a device that looks just like the iPhone 4, but carrying an upgraded A5 processor. That device carried an internal name of ‘N94′ which was previously believed to be the iPhone 5. Over the last few months, multiple conflicting sources have described the iPhone 5 as both thinner and lighter as well as largely identical to the iPhone 4. The “largely identical” report came from Reuters who did say that the new device would have a “bigger touch screen”.

The only concrete design that we’ve seen is one of a leaked design spec but we’ve not yet seen any related parts leak out into the supply system.

Comex, the hacker behind JailbreakMe.com, is joining Apple as an intern. JailbreakMe.com made it extremely easy for iOS users to jailbreak their devices simply by visiting a website. He announced the hiring on Twitter:

It’s been really, really fun, but it’s also been a while and I’ve been getting bored. So, the week after next I will be starting an internship with Apple.

Forbes unmasked Comex as Nicholas Allegra, a 19-year old Brown University student from Chappaqua, NY, by Forbes. In that article, Allegra described jailbreaking as “like editing an English paper… You just go through and look for errors. I don’t know why I seem to be so effective at it.”

Allegra’s latest jailbreak utilized an exploit in Apple’s PDF renderer to run custom software to crack iOS devices. Apple patched the bug after little more than a week, but the elegant solution, and the complete ease with which it allowed users jailbreak their phones, illustrate the talent that Allegra has.

The Forbes article ended by wondering if Apple’s security team needs a new intern. It seems that they do, though Allegra didn’t specify what he will be working on at Apple.

This isn’t the first time Apple has hired from the jailbreak community. Earlier this year MobileNotifier developer Peter Hajas was picked up as an Apple summer intern. Unlike Hajas, however, Allegra has actually been responsible for some of the tools that have made jailbreaking possible on the iPhone.

With Steve Jobs’ resignation as Apple CEO last wednesday, there have been many reflections on his career and the impact he had on shaping Apple, the technology industry, and beyond. The New York Times takes an interesting perspective on his attention to detail, noting that Jobs has been named as an inventor on a total of 313 Apple patents. Of those, Jobs appears as the lead inventor 33 times.

Jobs’ name appears not only on patents for iconic devices like the iPhone but also on a number of less prominent details ranging from the glass staircases found in some Apple retail stores to power adapters to cardboard packaging for various iPod models.

Mr. Jobs appears as the principal inventor or as one inventor among several on 313 Apple patents. Most are design patents that cover the look and feel of a product, rather than utility patents, which may cover a technical innovation like a software algorithm or computer chip.

Still, the number of patents is far larger than those granted to most other technology company chiefs, including those whose technical breakthroughs and inventions were instrumental to their companies’ success. Just nine Microsoft patents carry the name of Bill Gates, who was a co-founder of the company and its chief executive for more than two decades before stepping down in 2000. And little more than a dozen Google patents carry the names of co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, according to a search of the United States Patent and Trademark Office Web site.

The New York Times has put together an interactive feature highlighting Apple patents attributed to Jobs. More than 200 of the patents attributed to Jobs also list Apple design guru Jonathan Ive, indicating the close collaboration between the two in creating the vision for Apple’s products.

Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO of Apple in a letter to Apple’s Board of Directors. In his letter, Steve asks to remain Chairman of the Board and appoints Tim Cook as his successor. The board has approved these requests, effective immediately. Jobs will still be “active” at Apple and is expected to continue to be involved with company strategy.

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Art Levinson, chairman of Genentech and an Apple board member for more than 10 years, issued this statement on behalf of the board:

Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company. Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.

Jobs was diagnosed and treated for pancreatic cancer in 2004. He’s taken three separate leaves of absence for medical reasons during and since that time. In 2009, Jobs had a liver transplant at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, TN. He has been away from his day-to-day duties since January of this year.

Regarding Tim Cook’s appointment as CEO, Levinson wrote:

The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO. Tim’s 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does.

Apple’s stock was paused in after-hours trading at 4:19PM for approximately 35 minutes. The final trade was at $375.56. When trading resumed at 4:55, Apple’s stock was down more than 5% to $351.

SplatF pulls out one key detail from the full report, noting that not only is Apple’s 14-month-old iPhone 4 continuing to lead the market in sales, but that the 8 GB iPhone 3GS takes the second spot in the rankings. The iPhone 3GS was introduced 26 months ago, and Apple kept the device around following last year’s iPhone 4 introduction by dropping the capacity to 8 GB and offering it at a $99 price point for entry-level users. Pricing has since dropped to $49, with occasional deals bringing the price as low as free.

Here are the top five best-selling phones during Q2, via NPD’s Mobile Phone Track service:

1. Apple iPhone 4
2. Apple iPhone 3GS
3. HTC EVO 4G
4. HTC Inspire 4G
5. Samsung INTENSITYII

Apple has attempted to keep sales momentum for the iPhone 4 moving forward with the introduction of a CDMA version on Verizon and the much-delayed launch of a white version of the device earlier this year. But even as Apple has diverged from its usual annual cycle of iPhone releases by pushing the iPhone 5 out to September or October this year, the iPhone 4 and even the iPhone 3GS continue to top the charts in U.S. sales.

As the design is finalized, and production begins to ramp up, it’s common to see early parts leak into the supply chain.

We were tipped that iPhone parts supplier TVC Mall has posted a few new claimed iPhone 5 parts this evening, including the Battery, Back Camera Lens, and Headphone/Earphone Audio Jack Flex Cable. The new parts are definitely different from the existing iPhone 4 parts, though the superficial changes seem unrevealing. We’ve shown them side-by-side in comparison, using images of iPhone 4 parts courtesy of iFixit.

The claimed iPhone 5 battery is of roughly the same shape of the existing iPhone 4 battery. The labeled specifications on the iPhone 5 part shows 3.7V and 5.3Whr while the iPhone 4 part shows 3.7V and 5.25Whr, showing roughly the same power.

The new part also has a plausible part number of 616-0580 as compared to the iPhone 4′s 616-0513 and 616-0521 part numbers. The connector on the new battery is rotated in comparison to the iPhone 4 part.

The back camera module shown here seems to reveal a closely embedded camera flash much like the iPhone 4′s design. There had been some early rumors that the iPhone 5′s camera may be separated from the camera module, or that the iPhone 5 may even get dual LED flash. The iPhone 5′s camera has been rumored to be an 8 mega pixel camera, upgraded from the 5 mega pixel camera found in the iPhone 4.

As with all these early iPhone 5 parts, the supplier website has scant details on the specifications. In fact, we doubt that they even know the specifications at this stage. Some dimensions do seem to be given for the parts, but when compared the dimensions for known parts (such as the iPhone 4 battery) on the same site, there seemed to be a wide discrepancy against other published specs we’d found on the internet. So, we can’t put much faith in the listed dimensions.

The final new part listed on the site is the Audio Jack Flex cable. There isn’t much we can say about it, though it does look very different from the existing GSM and CDMA parts. We asked iFixit’s Kyle Wiens and just based on the images shown, Wiens said that the part numbers were reasonable, and the markings consistent with the currently shipping cable.

The iPhone 5 is widely expected to launch in September or October.

Update: iFixit has gotten its hands on what appears to be the exact same camera module being advertised by TVC Mall as being for the iPhone 5. According to iFixit’s Kyle Wiens, the sensor is essentially identical to the iPhone 4′s camera, checking in at the same 5-megapixel resolution with other specs also appearing to be identical. Consequently, it is unclear if this is indeed an iPhone 5 camera module, an existing iPhone 4 module, or perhaps an “iPhone 4S” camera module should Apple be looking to introduce a new low-end model based on the existing iPhone 4 design.

Apple’s complaint, seen by Webwereld, a Dutch IDG publication, seeks an injunction for the entire Galaxy series. This includes smartphones — the Galaxy Ace, Galaxy S and Galaxy SII — and tablets: the Galaxy Tab 7 and Galaxy Tab 10.1. Other Galaxy devices, like the Gio, Nexus, 551, Europa, Apollo and Mini are also involved, albeit only in a footnote in which Apple states, “It is expected that these devices are also covered by one or more of the patent rights invoked.”

Apple demands an extensive ban on these devices, covering manufacturing, stocking, importing, distributing, trading or selling by Samsung Korea and its Dutch subsidiaries, which include Samsung Logistics BV and Samsung Overseas BV.

Apple has demanded that Samsung request recalls of all stock within 14 days and provide compensation to vendors in its distribution channels while also putting the vendors on notice that refusal to return stocks would put them in violation of Apple’s intellectual property rights.

The court in The Hague is scheduled to rule on the case on September 15th, with any potential injunctions not to take effect before October 13th.

Backing up a report from TiPb last week claiming that Apple is shooting for an October 7th launch of the iPhone 5, 9 to 5 Mac now reports that it is hearing similar information. According to source, Apple is reportedly planning to begin pre-orders for the iPhone 5 on September 29th or 30th, with the actual launch scheduled for either October 7th or 14th.

According to our sources, Apple has been weighing between launching the new iPhone on October 7th or October 14th, but with the product’s latest stages of pre-mass-production currently moving along nicely, Apple is presently shooting towards a launch on the 7th. On top of this, unlike with the iPad 2, Apple plans to offer pre-orders for the new iPhone.

Apple currently plans to begin pre-orders for their next-generation smartphone in the final days of September. The company has still not finalized the pre-order start date, but is debating between Thursday, September 29th and Friday, September 30th. The 30th seems more likely at this point according to one of our sources.

The report comes with strong caveats that Apple’s launch plans are a constantly shifting target and that things could change at any time, but expresses confidence that these are indeed the dates Apple is currently shooting for.

With pre-orders coming at the very end of September, that milestone would presumably be preceded by a media event to introduce the new iPhone and other hardware such as new iPods. While there has been a considerable amount of back-and-forth about whether Apple will bring out the new iPhone in September or October, some of the more mainstream reports have been adamant about an October launch. Complicating the issue is the fact that an introductory media event, possible pre-order start date, and product availability can all occur on separate dates over a period of several weeks, and few reports have specified exactly which, if not all, of those three events they are referring to with their timeframe claims.
